A quick and easy project suitable for newbies and kids. |
Over the holidays, I decided that I wanted to decorate the exterior of our house which is kind of unusual for us. We hardly ever do much more than change out our wreath for the holidays so Andrew was kind of surprised that I wanted to decorate for Halloween, although he wasn’t surprised to hear that I had another project in mind. So off to Hobby Lobby I went with every intention to pick out the perfect Halloween fabric. Obviously, I didn’t get a very Halloween-y fabric because I ended up falling in LOVE with this glittery gold chevron fabric. This easy peasy banner is great for beginning sewers or kids. It was super quick to whip up and didn’t cost too much at all.

Things you’ll need: fabric and ribbon |
Things you’ll need:
- Fabric – It depends on the banner size you want. I bought roughly 2 yards and it made two 6 foot banners with each cut pennant measuring about 8.5″ wide and 10.5″ tall.
- Ribbon – I used 3/8″ grosgrain ribbon.
- Template – I cut mine out with card stock.

Fabric Pennant Banner Tutorial |
Step 1: Make a template that you can use to cut out your pennants. I used card stock because it was sturdy. I just eyeballed the angle I was looking for. I went with a less dramatic angle and used up the majority of my card stock.
Step 2: I traced my template on the fabric making sure to alternate with each one. If you have a more directional fabric, you’ll have to make sure all your pennants are facing the same way.
Step 3: Iron the end top edges over just enough to fit over the width of your ribbon.
Step 4: Sew the pennants onto the ribbon. I overlapped with each pennant so less ribbon would show on the front side.
And you’re done! You can decide how much ribbon you want to keep on each side of the banner for display purposes. I kept about 20 inches on each side so I knew I’d have enough to tie around things. Even though this was intended for Halloween, I ended up keeping this up through the New Year and it held up really well outdoors. Try this out and let me know how it goes!
