April’s Sew My Style pattern was definitely a push outside my comfort zone, but that is kind of the point so I was happy to have a bit of a challenge. The jumpsuit isn’t something I have in my wardrobe just yet so I decided to go for it. Turns out, I really enjoyed working through this pattern and my finished jumpsuit is actually quite fun and comfortable to wear. I’m happy to say that I’ve found a few occasions to wear this to including a special day with the queen of jumpsuits herself, Alison Faulkner.

The Marigold pattern from Tilly and the Buttons actually has two variations: jumpsuit or trousers. The jumpsuit itself is super comfy so I can only imagine how amazing the trousers would be. I definitely plan on making the trousers once I find the perfect fabric. For my jumpsuit, I used some mystery fabric from the clearance bin at Walmart. I actually didn’t think the finished product would be good enough to be worn in public, but I was obvioulsy wrong because my first try ended up being the final version.

I don’t have a ton of technical skills mastered yet so this pattern was definitely a challenge. It wasn’t overly difficult, but it did take some time to figure out the darts, pleats, and invisible zipper. The pattern and sewalong online helped a ton in explaining how to do these steps which I really appreciated. It definitely made it a lot easier to sew as I went though all the step-by-step instructions.
The bodice was probably the most challenging and I still have some issues with the fit, but I’m happy with where I ended up. The strap placement gave me a lot of trouble for some reason and I ended up shortening and moving them in to prevent them from slipping off. This is a size 2 with 2″ shortened in the trousers. For my next attempt, I’m not going to do the sweetheart neckline on the bodice. I don’t think it’s very flattering on me and I think it would help make the bodice easier.
If you’re unsure about the jumpsuit trend, I would definitely recommend trying it out! I love wearing mine with a jean jacket for early spring weather and think it’s such a fun addition to my handmade wardrobe. I am really glad I tried out this pattern and I can’t wait to try more variations of this including the trousers and a shorts version!
Are you jumping on the jumpsuit wagon? What patterns do you recommend? Have you made a Marigold yet?
