With warmer weather around the corner, I can’t help but think about one of my favorite patterns: the York Pinafore from Helen’s Closet. Because I’m a sucker for pinafores, the pattern was a must-have the second I saw its release in 2018 and I ended up making a few different versions. Helen recently re-released the pattern with a wider size range which means there are even more amazing versions on Instagram to help inspire my next version. I already have 3 great variations so I thought it was due time to talk about how much I love this pattern.
Variation 1: Made from a leftover linen blend from Joann in my stash, the color wasn’t my first choice, but it was a great first go at the pattern. I used the higher neckline option and may have shortened it a couple inches. (I can’t remember exactly, but I usually do that with Helen’s patterns.) I also accidentally have a center back seam because I forgot to cut on a fold, but it just adds an unintentional design element. It only took 1 yard of fabric which makes it an amazing stashbuster and I love the kangaroo pocket. Wearing this version out on a errand even prompted my first clothing compliment from a stranger!
Variation 2: I love everything in a classic black and this version was my most worn make last year. It was in constant rotation in the summer with a simple tank top underneath. I even wore it to Comic-Con and fell even more in love because of the practical, giant pockets. This version also features the longer length and lower neckline which I realized very quickly I preferred over my first version. It takes a bit more fabric than 1 yard so I can’t easily pull from my stash, but this one was made with a Kona cotton I had excess of.
Variation 3: This linen blend from Joann was all over Instagram last spring/summer. I purchased a few yards with no particular project in mind and ultimately decided to use it for this version. Using the York Pinafore gathered waist hack from Helen’s blog post, I love how this easy change makes the pattern even more wearable. I love my other versions, but this one is by far the most comfortable since it’s not restrictive anywhere. The only thing I’d change about this make is adding inseam pockets. I always forget to add them if the pattern doesn’t call for it and I sorely miss having them.
I love Helen’s patterns because she’s really good at teaching you new techniques while also explaining why they’re important. From these thorough instructions, I learned how to make my own bias tape which is strangely addictive and gives the perfect touch of personalization.
I want to make more versions of this pattern this summer and will hopefully tackle more of the hacks on Helen’s blog, but will try to focus on other “needs” first. What should my next version look like? Have you made yourself a pinafore yet?
