Can you believe I’ve never made a proper set of pajamas? Considering I practically live in pajamas at home, it’s really about time and I finally had a push as a leader of this month’s Sew My Style challenge. I made the Night Garden set and am sharing all the details below!
From the Sew to Grow website:
Get a restful night’s sleep in the Night Garden Pajama Set. The wide-leg pants feature a satin ribbon tie, pockets, and a contrast cuff. Make them on their own or pair them with the simple, adjustable strap, camisole. This PJ set would sew up beautifully in a quilting weight cotton, or make it in rayon for a completely luxurious feel! Sleep tight…
*This pattern was provided to me for free as a member of the #sewmystyle2019 leadership team. All views and opinions are my own.
What I like about this pattern:
- Suitable for beginners because of its clear and concise instructions.
- A quick and satisfying make with simple options for customization.
- Make this even faster/easier by omitting the buttonholes and ribbon tie.
- Can easily be hacked for plenty of future makes.
- Petite friendly. The only modification I made was to the pant length.
- Great for quilting cottons which I’ve accumulated. (This print in particular has been in my stash for 1.5 years.)
- There’s a mini version available for matching family pajamas!
Details:
I made size XS based on my bust and hip measurements. The top doesn’t have darts which can be a problem for some, but since I usually have to make a small bust adjustment anyway, I didn’t have a problem with that.
I omitted the top pocket and opted to make fixed straps rather than adjustable ones, because I like the cleaner look. To complete the top, I followed the construction steps of the Ogden Cami from True Bias. (A pattern that everyone must have. Sewalong here.) Not having adjustable straps makes it slightly harder to take off, but not impossible thankfully.
The only modification I made was to the pant length. Since I’m only about 5 feet tall, I ended up taking roughly 4-5 inches off which put the hem at the top of my foot. (I didn’t read until afterward that the finished inseam was 31 inches.) I also strayed away from the supply list by using 3/4 inch elastic and 7/8 inch ribbon because that’s what I had on hand.
Final thoughts:
I didn’t think I’d like these pajamas as much as I do. Even though it isn’t a style I would normally pick, I had fun choosing fabrics and I enjoyed sewing it up. I don’t usually wear tank tops to sleep in, but I can definitely see this top in my everyday wardrobe (which is another reason I omitted the top pocket and adjustable straps). The pants are insanely comfortable and I’m sure I’ll get plenty of use out of them as well. I can see myself making plenty more versions of this in the future!
Have you made pajamas before? What are your favorite patterns?
If you haven’t yet, you can still join December’s Sew My Style challenge by sewing one of the patterns by the last Sunday of the month. This month, we have the choice between 2 pajama patterns:
