I’m back with another blog post for Raspberry Creek Fabrics today! I’ve really enjoyed my time on their promo team and am excited to share another make with you. Raspberry Creek Fabrics has a ton of amazing knits, but this time, I opted for a cotton/linen pinstripe woven fabric to try something new. I originally thought I’d make a dress and went back and forth on what pattern to make before I finally decided on a pair of culottes.
*This post was sponsored, however, all views and opinions are always my own.
Fabric
I’m a big fan of wovens and tend to make more wovens than knits. When I saw this pinstripe fabric, I knew I had to give it a try even though the colors are a bit lighter than I tend to wear. The cream background and blue pinstripes give it a really pretty neutral vibe though so I decided to go for it. It’s made of 50% linen and 50% cotton which gives it a really nice feel. It’s breathable, a bit wrinkly with the linen, and very easy to sew with. It’s heftier than I expected, but washes up nicely and would be great for anything you want a bit more structure for. I’d love to see this fabric in more makes!
Pattern
Ultimately, I decided to make a pair of pants. I’ve been living in my elastic waisted pants all year and knew I’d get more use out of pants instead of a dress. I’ve made a zillion Free Range Slacks already so I decided to go back to an old favorite: the Fernway Culottes by Twig + Tale. I made a size F, based off of my waist measurement, and cut quite a bit of length off the calf length version. I initially shortened it 2 inches, but went back and took more length off before all was said and done. I think it was about 5 inches in total to make it more calf length for my height. For a fabric like this, I didn’t want it to be too overwhelming and I think this shorter length works well.
This is a pattern I tested for awhile ago and my tester pair is still one of my most worn pants which is why I wanted to give it another try. The pinstripe definitely gives it a different look from my solid colored pair and I think the final result is pretty good. The fabric gives the pleats a very structured look while the stripes gives it more interest. I know I’m going to get lots of wear out these come warmer weather.
One of the best parts about this pattern is the waistband. It has a flat front with a double elastic back waistband which makes it very easy to adjust for comfort. It is a bit overwhelming with fabric in the back, especially in this weight of fabric, but I am still pretty happy with how this turned out. I’m still a little regretful that I didn’t make myself a dress, but at least I know I’ll wear this and there’s always next time.
Have you made a pair of culottes yet? What would you make with this pinstripe fabric?
