This gift idea is inspired by one of the coolest neighbor/friend gifts we’ve ever received. It was a set of single serve mug cakes in small condiment sized containers. We instantly fell in love with the unique and yummy experience of making a mug cake and decided we needed to make our own version for gifts.
While I loved how easy the individual servings were to make, I wanted a more reusable friendly option for our version which is why I chose to use mason jars. This is one of the easiest gifts you’ll ever put together and something easy for kids to help with!
What You’ll Need:
- Mason jars. Pint sized mason jars are the perfect size and hold plenty of mix and chocolate chips for multiple servings. You could also reuse old glass jars.
- Cake mix. There are a lot of different recipes out there, but I wanted to find the simplest one that only needed water added. I chose this one from Betty Crocker for Chocolate Molten Lava Mug Cakes. If you want to make a lot of gifts, double the recipe and get 1 box of white angel food cake mix and 2 dark chocolate cake mix.
- Chocolate chips. I used semisweet which is what I had on hand.
- Plastic baggies. I used snack sized Ziplock bags.
Instructions:
- Combine the cake mixes well.
- Fill jars with mix. I found that slightly less than 1 1/4 cup was a good amount for 6 servings and left enough space at the top for chocolate chips.
- Fill baggies with chocolate chips. I added a rounded tablespoon of chips per serving.
- Put the bag of chocolate chips in the jar and you’re done!
To make this super cute and giftable, I added ribbon, twine, and a tag with instructions. This was made specifically for Christmas gifts, but would work well for just about any occasion. Feel free to download the free printable below for your gifts! It can be sized for your personal preference. If you use these tags, please tag me on Instagram or link back here. I’d love to see how you used them.
